America's healthcare system evolved into what it is today after a series of very complex influences took ahold of it. In In Sickness and in Wealth, Rosemary Stevens examined the American system from 1900 to 1989 and added an addition that covered its evolution to 1999. Stevens starts by discussing the period where health care expanded. The expansion period added such things as mergers, preventative care and outpatient procedures, yet when the Affordable Care Act passed the business landscaped started to change all over again. The most interesting aspect of the reading was her predictions on the future, which unsurprisingly resembles our healthcare system today. As the book continues, I am positive that we will get a comprehensive understanding of how the system progresses into the healthcare system of today. |
